Making Parks Pay - Changes, Charges and Challenges

A CMA Study Day on 15th July 2009 atGreat Notley Country Park & Flitch Way, Braintree, Essex CM77 7FS

10am - Coffee on arrival at the Discovery Centre; Great Notley Country Park (Park in the large visitor car park and ask for a car park pass on arrival at the Centre).

10.30am – A presentation by Tim Dixon; Head of Country Parks for Essex County Council. Tim will explain how the new Country Park came about (a joint venture between Braintree DC & Essec CC) and how it is currently managed. Furthermore, the subject of income generation will be discussed as the intention is to make Great Notley Country Park & Flitch Way self funded.

11.30am
– A visit to some of the facilities and management areas in the 100 acre Country park with Head Ranger Steve Bunn. The Country Park has a particular focus on providing for its large visitor numbers with facilities such as an adventure play area/play equipment; way marked/disabled trails; a sensory trail for the partially sighted; Educational initiatives; Events area; Bike hire; Bike Trails and Bridleways; works of art; Bistro/café; wind turbine etc. Steve will share with us some of the income generation initiatives - both the things that have worked and the things that have given a few snags.

12.30-1.30 Lunch. Bring your own sarnies or there is a café/bistro selling an excellent range of snacks/light meals and a Tesco just over the road.

1.30 pm An afternoon walk along the Flitch Way as far as Rayne Station and back, giving a further chance to network with colleagues from around the region discussing topics of the day.

3pm/3.30pm Back at café - cup of tea then homeward bound
